Funding Tutorial
Making development sustainable through open funding
Passion projects, characterized by intense enthusiasm and personal investment, often face the issue of 'flash and burn'—a burst of effort followed by rapid decline in interest and progress. This occurs when initial excitement cannot be maintained over the long haul without structured support. In contrast, SC-Open encourages sustainable collaborative development focuses on creating a strong foundation for long-term success. It involves collective commitment, shared responsibilities, and ongoing engagement from the community, ensuring that projects do not just start strong but also have the resilience to continue evolving and thriving. This approach transforms the fleeting intensity of a passion project into a lasting endeavor, avoiding the pitfalls of 'flash and burn' through strategic planning and community involvement.
Patreon
The creator platform with Patreon continues to grow over time with additional features. One of the reasons to recommend Patreon is that it allows for transparency which is a core prinicple for SC-Open.
By default your creator page will show how many members you have and content you’ve shared to your members. It is recommended that you choose the optional sharing to show the level of funding you’re currently receiving. This is a great way to quickly show the health and sustainability of your project or the need for more support with no ‘funny business’.
Go to Patreon and sign-up for an account.
Make a Creator page.
Follow their helpful getting-started actions including providing an about description, subscription tiers and rewards and culminating in your first public post.
Integrate with Discord to have updates go to a channel in your discord community.
GitHub Sponsors
If you’ve chosen GitHub as your repository, you can take advantage of the GitHub Sponsors program which allows qualifying open-source projects to find funding support. One of the great features is that this also supports integration with Patreon allowing your sponsors to sponsor you through that avenue (great for international communities and PayPal support).
GitHub sponsors also allows you to set goals, if you choose to set a monetary goal it will share your current monthly funding towards that goal.
Go to your profile or organization settings page.
